Creating a Line-Item

Add a line-item to an assumption, choosing which simulation nodes it applies to and whether each one is absolute or relative.

  1. To add a Line-Item to your assumption, click on the “+” button on an assumption.
  2. In the first step to create a Line-Item, you can select one or multiple simulation nodes for which you wish to create line items.
  3. All line items are “Absolute” by default. In the next step you can mark some or all as “Relative” as well as assign a name for each line item.
  4. Click ‘create’ to create the defined line items.

Absolute Line-Item

  • Used to enter absolute values as the change to your base data
  • Has a fixed dimensionality which cannot be changed

Relative Line-Item

  • Used to enter relative values as the change to your base data

  • The dimensionality of a relative Line-Item can be adjusted

    • In a relative Line-Item it is possible to select a hierarchically higher level in the dimensionality, which will aggregate the lower level values into the new level E.g. The Line-Item is based on ‘Months’ in the ‘Time’ dimension. By changing the dimensionality and selecting ‘Year’ from the ‘Time’ dimension, all the values from ‘01-2023’ till ‘12-2023’ will be aggregated to ‘2023’.

Whether a line-item is absolute or relative is a property of the line-item, not of the node. A percentage unit on the node does not make changes to it relative, and it is not a prerequisite for creating a relative line-item.

A relative line-item needs something to scale

A relative line-item multiplies the node’s calculated value. If that value is 0, the result stays 0 and the line-item appears to do nothing. This is the normal case on a model kept deliberately neutral, where the node computes something like EXPAND(0, ...) and all the movement is meant to come from the Scenario Manager.

Adding an absolute line-item to the same node does not help. Relative line-items are applied to the node’s own value first and absolute ones are added afterwards, so the relative one never sees the absolute change. Either use an absolute line-item, or give the node a base value for the relative one to scale.
